Annual Running of the Dogs….

February 17th, 2011

Mid Winter thaw, that’s putting it lightly!  There is something just plain & wrong about it being 60 degrees in the Upper Peninsula in February.  It sure was nice to feel the bright sunshine though, fish didn’t really appreciate the bright sunshine although the angler sure enjoyed the day! Rivers for the most part haven’t risen much as they were the lowest they have been all Winter.  A bit of color is present from the melt off now and no significant numbers of new Steelhead have entered rivers. Some nice Steelhead were produced this week as well as this rare mid Winter trophy U.P. Brook Trout. Forecast is getting back to normal just in time for the annual U.P. 200 sled dog race, should be good conditions for dogs as well as mushers with fast trail conditions as the snow should freeze u solid.  The U.P. 200 is a great family event & unique to our Upper Peninsula, come downtown Marquette or anywhere along the trail to support the teams!

Commander in Chief

Quite a day to be a resident of Michigan’s U.P.- a visit from our nations President had nearly everyone here in Marquette County grinning from ear to ear.  I was invited to attend the very small event by Senator Stabenow’s office, who I worked closely with during my visit to Washington DC last year on the Asian Carp issue.  It was outstanding to be able to participate in the event and welcome President Obama to the Upper Peninsula.  Many thanks go out to Sen. Stabenow & her staff-this will will a lifelong memory that I greatly appreciate.  I look forward to working with you to help keep our Great Lakes safe from invasive species such as the Asian Carp.

A proud day for NMU alumni, students, staff & the community-thanks for visiting Mr. President!

Obama Week

February 7th, 2011

Some descent air temps over the course of the past few days have provided for some motivation to fish the open water.  Some good Steelhead fishing is available in some areas here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, look for fish in typical Winter holding areas.  Pictured below is Erika with a beautiful Winter colored Steelhead, proving that girls can catch bigger fish than some men!

Wow, props go out to the community owned Green Bay Packers for putting together a damn good ending to the year!  The pride of the Midwest-Go Pack Go!!

Da Yoop Backs Da Pack

February 3rd, 2011

The pride of the Midwest in the biggest game of them all- Three words sum it up.

Go Pack Go!!!!

Currently here in the U.P. it’s the heart of Winter and open water angling opportunities are limited.  Frankly its just not that much fun to go out & freeze your butt off Steelhead fishing when the high temps hit around 20 degrees. More time has been spent inside the ice shack where the heater keeps it warm and you can feel your feet/fingers!  Below are some pics of the Upper Peninsula in Mid Winter, the frozen beautiful paradise of the North.
