RIVERS NORTH UPPER PENINSULA FISHING REPORT!

Summertime?

June 27th, 2011

Currently some large rain events have rivers up across the Upper Peninsula, rivers have crested and are now currently dropping.  The Trout fishing scene is still going strong with ideal water temps with the cool weather we have been receiving.  Some fish are rising in the high water to BWO’s, Cahills, Black Quills & a few Brown Drakes.  Streamers & large nymphs are also good choices with the current water conditions.  The St.Marys River system currently has a few Atlantic Salmon present as well as Steelhead & resident Rainbow Trout.  Patient anglers have been rewarded with some very nice fish.  Water temps remain very cold for this time of the season there-currently running at 48 degrees.

The Essence of Troutn’

June 18th, 2011

Some excellent opportunities for the dry fly fishing enthusiast has been present as of lately here in the U.P.; Brown Drake duns & spinners have been bringing up some high quality Trout.  When the Drakes haven’t been present- BWO’s, Mahoganies,  Black Quills and a couple late Sulphurs have been filling the void to keep fish looking up.  Some very nice Brown Trout and Brook trout have been taken lately, Congrats to all our guests!  Long time client/friend Sally put together 2 great days of fishing & got this trophy 20 inch Brown Trout to the net-Great job :)

You’s Betcha…

June 10th, 2011

Lots has changed weather wise over the course of this week, as we went from 90 degree heat to 50 degree temps in a course of 2 hours one night.  That can mess with insect activity quite a bit as water temps took a large nosedive after that temp event.  A large amount of differing insects are active, mayflies such Drakes, Mahoganies & March Browns were around with the hot weather- now with the colder weather BWO’s have taken over in some areas.  Right now every fly fishing technique known to man is putting some fish in the net, just need to be there at the right time fishing the right technique. Check out the Schultz Fly Fishing crew, thanks for coming up & looking forward to our next adventure!

Long Shadows

June 3rd, 2011

Trout season is in full swing across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, some dry fly fishing opportunities are available as well as subsurface.  Insect activity varies quite largely depending upon location, with tail water fisheries having the most activity.  Caddis, Stoneflies, March Browns, Suphurs and some Brown Drakes are bringing trout to the surface.  Also with the Memorial Day weekend all warm water species seasons are now open, another fun option to try here in the U.P.!  The baby fawn in the pic below was safely rescued, it was warming itself on the sun heated concrete of the road on a not so warm recent day!
