RIVERS NORTH UPPER PENINSULA FISHING REPORT!

Da Opener

April 28th, 2011

Lots of new rain has brought river levels up considerably, levels and clarity depend largely upon location.  A mix of new Steelhead to dropback fish are currently available, water temps are ranging from upper 30’s to mid 40’s at this time. This years Spring Steelhead run has great for the fish as many have been able to spawn successfully with low stress under high water conditions. Good luck to all the anglers heading out for the holy weekend of Trout opener-enjoy!

In like a Lion

April 24th, 2011

Some downright cold weather & more snow this week; looking forward to the arrival of Spring one of these days!  Steelhead are available across the U.P. but the lower & colder water in some rivers has fishing tougher than it was previously in high water conditions.  Some substantial rains have risen some rivers while others remain gin clear and rather low.  Persistency & covering water thoroughly with quality presentations right now is key to getting some cooperation from the Steelhead.  Some trophy resident Trout have also been active, I was lucky to capitalize on a nice wild Coaster Brook Trout on a recent day off.

Winter in April?

April 17th, 2011

After a nice high water event, rivers have dropped and cooled off quite a bit, it now appears that Winter is back. Currently rivers levels are kinda all across the board as some remain high as other are actually low, clear & cold. Water temps are currently around the 34-36 degree range and some areas of the U.P. have received some ample late season snowfall-up to 8 inches in the high country. Some nice Steelhead are available and it looks like this cold weather/snow is going to be around for a while which should prolong the Steelhead fishing opportunities.

Summer’s Here

April 9th, 2011

Safe to say Spring is here at this point, daytime air temps near 60 degrees has our snow pack nearly gone as of now.  Rivers across the U.P. have risen and some new Steelhead are available.  Rivers have a heavy stain to them and water levels are all across the board depending upon location.  This week some small Stoneflies were present as well as a few Blue Winged Olives which were great to see.  Look for water levels to continue to rise as the forecast is calling for rain showers all week long.

Wintery Mix

April 3rd, 2011

A week of high sun, low water & cold water temps-the combo for some tough fishing conditions.  Water levels crept up slowly with the trickle of slow runoff from melting snow pack, this also gave a bit of color to the water.  Some Brown Trout are present &  a few new Steelhead have been showing up here in the U.P., but not in significant numbers as water temps are hovering around 34-36 degrees for the most part.  Some tiny Stoneflies have been present, but not much for significant numbers.
