RIVERS NORTH UPPER PENINSULA FISHING REPORT!

This past week here in the U.P. felt more like Spring…

June 25th, 2008

This past week here in the U.P. felt more like Spring than Summer with air temps in the upper 40’s on a few days! Finally some warm weather has moved in our way as the past few days have been more seasonable with temps in the 80’s! Atlantic Salmon & Steelhead are in fair #’s currently on the St.Marys River & are keyed into baitfish making for some excellent streamer opportunities! Water temps are in the mid 50’s, but warming everyday now with the sunshine. Some great fish have come to the net this week on a mix of different patterns. Persistency pays off when fishing for this spectacular fish! Kris has been taking care of the trout fishing back in the central U.P.. Trout fishing across the U.P. is still going very strong as Sulphurs & Brown Drakes are coming off in the evening. Nymphing & streamer fishing has also been very productive during mid day hours. Late June in the U.P.-a great getaway from reality!

Finally some warm weather is headed our way…

June 20th, 2008

Finally some warm weather is headed our way after rain, wind & spring like weather the past week. River levels have been high & are currently dropping making for some prime opportunities for fly fishing here across the U.P.! Brown Drakes, Iso’s & a smorgasbord of bugs have been making up the surface menu lately. Resident trout are looking up for their meals & dry fly fishing is good! Also the Atlantic Salmon fishing on the St.Marys River has started for this season! A fair amount of fish(Atlantics & Steelhead) are currently present and water temps are cold for this time of the year(49 degrees)! These Atlantic Salmon have been very angry & chasing down streamers with a vengeance. It is a great opportunity to take the a trophy Atlantic on a streamer! Hold on-high flying Salmo Salar!

The roller coaster of weather here has dry fly fishing good…

June 10th, 2008

The roller coaster of weather here has dry fly fishing good to non existent depending upon the day you are out on the water. Water temps are in the low 60’s and Mayfly activity has resident Trout looking up top. A few Sulphurs, lots of Caddis, a couple Brown Drakes, and BWO’s are still the key items up top. The cooler/cloudy days the BWO’s are out & the sub surface nymphing & streamer fishing has been very productive! The next couple weeks mayfly activity is going to be strong-this should be a nice long outstanding year of Trout fishing here in the U.P. with the cool weather pattern we are in. Trout fishing in the U.P.-solitude & sipping Trout. It’s worth the drive!

Cool weather has Mayfly activity a bit behind…

June 3rd, 2008

Cool weather has Mayfly activity a bit behind but everyday now more bugs are emergening. Depending upon the river system-Suplurs, Henricksens, BWO’s & Caddis are present. The cool evenings have been making hatches short-insects will come out -then temps drop & they disappear! Houdini Mayflies! Despite the lack of Mayfly activity Trout fishing I would rate as excellent over the past week. Cloud cover has provided for some prime opportunities during mid-day hours over the past week. If they are not feeding up top-give them something to munch on below the surface. The next week the forecast is looking considerably warmer-one would assume that the dry fly fishing is going to happen very soon! This slow warm up should provide for a great summer of Fly fishing here in the U.P.!
