Annual Running of the Dogs….

February 17th, 2011

Mid Winter thaw, that’s putting it lightly!  There is something just plain & wrong about it being 60 degrees in the Upper Peninsula in February.  It sure was nice to feel the bright sunshine though, fish didn’t really appreciate the bright sunshine although the angler sure enjoyed the day! Rivers for the most part haven’t risen much as they were the lowest they have been all Winter.  A bit of color is present from the melt off now and no significant numbers of new Steelhead have entered rivers. Some nice Steelhead were produced this week as well as this rare mid Winter trophy U.P. Brook Trout. Forecast is getting back to normal just in time for the annual U.P. 200 sled dog race, should be good conditions for dogs as well as mushers with fast trail conditions as the snow should freeze u solid.  The U.P. 200 is a great family event & unique to our Upper Peninsula, come downtown Marquette or anywhere along the trail to support the teams!
